https://mamacreamsoda.com/category/guide

ジェット君が、is he mad?

I started working as a guide on January 29, 2023, and on September 6, 2026, I finally reached my 100th tour. In total, I have guided 227 guests.
Step by step, one tour at a time—continuity really is power.
I’ve had many different guiding experiences. (Stories here ↓) https://mamacreamsoda.com/category/guide
I guide FIT guests, not big groups. Even when I go to the same places like Asakusa or Harajuku, the style is different each time—sometimes with a private car, sometimes by subway, and every guest has different ages and preferences.
Before each tour, I plan the route from the hotel and think about crowds depending on the day of the week. Lunch is always the biggest challenge. Especially with first‑time guests, I don’t know their food preferences, so I prepare several options in advance.
Even after 100 tours, I still get nervous before meeting guests.
My guiding mentor once told me, “I’ve been guiding for over ten years, but I still get nervous. Maybe when that nervousness disappears, that’s when it’s time to quit.” So true.
I always prepare carefully, and even if someone thinks I’m a “bad guide,” I accept it. All I can do is my best.
My 99th and 100th tours were on the same weekend with the same family from California—parents and two sons, 28 and 22.
Tokyo had constant rain and cooler temperatures in early September. When the weather looks bad, some guests prefer not to walk outside, so I always think about backup plans.
Saturday was a visit to a sumo stable, and Sunday was a full day of sightseeing. We visited Nakamura-beya, which I had also visited in April.
Last time, the guests froze with nervousness when they finally had a chance to talk to the wrestlers. It was a memorable tour.
Nakamura-beya was founded in 2024 and has a unique training style—morning and afternoon practices, breakfast, oxygen capsules, and more. Morning practice ends exactly in one hour, which helps guests who need to catch a train.
Before entering, I explained the basic manners: don’t point your feet toward the ring, no chatting, etc.
I expected practice to finish in one hour again, but because the September tournament was coming soon, the stablemaster was more fired up than before. Practice lasted a full two hours.
The 28‑year‑old son, Jet, arrived dressed like a rock musician—black outfit, lots of necklaces. He looked uninterested in sumo, but you should never judge by appearance. He ended up asking the most questions, writing them down one after another.
The stablemaster was strict, and the wrestlers were exhausted. Jet wrote, “Is he mad?” He doesn’t speak Japanese, so that’s how it sounded to him. I told him, “He’s not angry—he’s just passionate.”
But when practice ended and it was time for questions, everyone suddenly froze again. I guided them to the car.
Before getting in, they saw an 18‑year‑old young wrestler who had just joined the stable. The guests asked me questions again, so I encouraged them to talk to him directly. He proudly showed his muscles, and the mood relaxed.
Once we left the stable, everyone became excited. They said they didn’t know what to ask earlier, which was cute. Watching tough practice can make wrestlers feel intimidating.
The afternoon was free time. They wanted to walk around Ginza, so I finished the tour there. That was my 99th tour.
The next day, the father wasn’t feeling well, so I guided the mother and two sons. The plan was Meiji Shrine, Harajuku, Omotesando, and Shibuya—usually this leaves extra time, so I often add another stop.
Jet loves fashion and wanted to shop for clothes in Tokyo. He had already researched many vintage shops. This is not my strong area, especially for young men’s fashion.
I remembered Walter, a young guest from last year who loves fashion, and asked him for recommendations. I divided Harajuku and Omotesando into four areas and explained the style of each shop. Jet was very happy with the preparation.
The younger brother, Jess, looked pale that morning. He told me he had been drinking in Shinjuku until 4 a.m. with friends. I praised him for still joining the tour.
Jess didn’t have many shopping plans except buying Onitsuka Tiger sneakers and perfume for his girlfriend.
In heavy rain, we visited Meiji Shrine and talked about sumo and Shinto. Then shopping began.
Jet enjoyed Takeshita Street and Ura-Harajuku. Onitsuka Tiger is usually very crowded, but thanks to the rain, it was quieter. Jess tried to find the right size for his girlfriend, but they didn’t have it.
For lunch, they requested conveyor-belt sushi. Kura Sushi was fully booked, but Sushiro in Sasazuka had a 1 p.m. slot, so I booked it.
However, the driver and I waited at different DIOR stores in Omotesando. Because of the rain, the driver insisted on picking us up instead of making the guests walk. But Sunday traffic was terrible, and we waited 25 minutes.
I panicked—missing the reservation would cause a big complaint. Luckily, we made it just in time, and the guests weren’t upset. I reflected on giving clearer meeting instructions and making quicker decisions.
Even on my 100th tour, I learned a lot.
At Sushiro, everyone was delighted, and I felt relieved.
Later in Shibuya, we split up. I searched for the sneakers again but couldn’t find the size. Jess eventually bought them at the Skytree store the next day.
At PARCO’s JUMP SHOP, Jess suddenly became excited—he loves Jujutsu Kaisen and bought many stickers. After helping his girlfriend all day, he finally enjoyed his own shopping.
Jet also found the pants he wanted at a shop he had researched.
In the end, despite the Sushiro scare, they enjoyed their shopping day. My 100th tour was complete.
Next week is my 101st. I wonder how many more tours I’ll be able to do.
As always, I’ll prepare carefully, do my best, and help create wonderful memories of Japan.
That’s all for today!
